What Inspires Us

In December 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set out with 28 men on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. His ship was named Endurance. He solicited for adventurers with this ad:

“Men wanted for Hazardous Journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”

Despite adversity, Shackleton brought each of his men back alive.

In business, as in exploration, the likelihood of success is daunting. Of all new business startups, 1/3 eventually turn a profit, 1/3 break even, and 1/3 never leave a negative earnings scenario. According to a study by the U.S. Small Business Association, only 2/3 of all small business startups survive the first two years and less than half make it four years.
